Found in the tunnels under the River Tyne (yes, in that order), are the world’s longest wooden escalators. They have won many awards such as “Bold Resistance to Innovation”, “Unnecessary Risk of the Year”, and “Things That Should not Float”. The tunnels themselves were built under the river in 1951 to provide more expedient commuting for shipyard and factory workers. Granted that you’ve already arrived at the popular “they yearn for the mines” trope, it’s also worth mentioning that, even though the tunnels are directly underneath a body of water, the weather is better in them than on the surface above. But the food still sucks. The tunnels bear tiled walls, which carry sound over long distances within. Of course, it’s pedestrians and cyclists sharing a confined space in the UK, so it’s a safe bet they mostly communicate through hand gestures and headbutts.
