Toasters

Updated: Jan 13

A toaster is a small electrical appliance used to toast bread. This is not to be confused with a taoster — which is a person who attempts to achieve harmony with the ultimately unknowable nature of the universe, but has no effect on bread (therefore “useless”). The heating elements in toasters work similarly to the filaments in lightbulbs, which is why many people use them as emergency lights. Most common toasters are of the “pop-up” variety. This type of toaster is designed to burn the bread as quickly and thoroughly as possible before ejecting the bread just enough to be seen, but not reached without serious harm to the user (called the “event horizon”). The common ritual of using drinks to have a “toast” comes from King Georgeward VI, who once held up a glass and said "toast", when he meant to say “booze”.
