Illinois’s Original Burger King (Illinois)

Like all major fast food chains, Burger King has a strange, one-off, stand-alone restaurant that started as a small family business which is not a part of the major franchise. Seriously, they all have one. The small Burger King (hereafter referred to as “bk”) was started in 1959 by Betty and Gene Hoots. The married couple registered their business before the BK chain got its start in Illinois, so they were legally entitled to continue their business, as well as stick out their tongues. When the BK franchise expanded into Illinois, the Hootses filed lawsuitses. The court ruled that BK had to stay outside a 20-mile radius of bk. This being in the 1960s, the BK corporation entrenched and reinforced on the edges of this perimeter and set up security checkpoints, and the solitary bk restaurant had provisions flown in directly. Tensions peaked when the Soviets misinterpreted the situation and, purely out of habit, supplied the small business with nuclear missiles. Cooler heads prevailed, and things worked out. Today, one can visit the Hootses’ legally troubled restaurant and order their signature item: The Hooter Burger. Their slogan is “God is a fool and Death is a coward.”
