Carvings of El Jalacate (Nicaragua)

Cam Writt

Alberto Gutierrez has spent much of his life etching brilliant carvings into rocks. For this reason, he has been banned from the Lincoln Memorial and several cemeteries. He’s widely known as a hermit, which is a fun way of calling him a failure in that endeavor. Gutierrez lives deep in the mountains of the Tisey Estanzuela Natural Reserve, where he produces many works of art. The pieces include elephants, birds, life-size anacondas, and fantasy-size gnomes – all chiseled into the mountainside. He also produces landscapes, chiseled onto the landscape (to match his full-body tattoo of a person slightly shorter than him). He has depicted cathedrals, the Twin Towers, and Columbus’s ships (he has a thing for disasters, apparently). In 2014, an art thief was apprehended while attempting to steal Gutierrez’s carving of the Battle of Gallipoli. The criminal was foiled when, as he attempted to walk out, a mountain fell out of his pants.
