Bailong Elevator (China)

Cam Writt

Shanghai Tower, the tallest building in China, was very nearly unseated from its superlative position by another construction project in the early 2000s. Luckily for it, the architects and contractors were all given different coordinates, leaving the food court on the bottom of a lake, and a ridiculously tall elevator now sits neatly tucked in a sandstone mountain range in Zhangjiajie. Being the world’s tallest outdoor elevator, Bailong, or “Hundred Dragons”, peaks at 326 meters (1,070 feet) tall. Stop trying to calculate how long that means a single dragon is. Just let there be some mystery in your life. The ride to the top only takes a minute and thirty seconds, and visitors are advised to tie their shoes extra tight to keep from passing out. Once at the top of the elevator, riders are offered gorgeous views of the surrounding forest and gorges, which are commonly engorged with rainwater and wild alligorgers. This monument to advanced engineering is maintained and updated regularly, and by 2030, should be wheelchair accessible.
